Drinking water can be harmful to smallest babies

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Babies younger than six months old should never be given water to drink, physicians at Johns Hopkins Children's Center in Baltimore remind parents. Consuming too much water can put babies at risk of a potentially life-threatening condition known as water intoxication.

"Even when they're very tiny, they have an intact thirst reflex or a drive to drink," Dr. Jennifer Anders, a pediatric emergency physician at the center, told Reuters Health. "When they have that thirst and they want to drink, the fluid they need to drink more of is their breast milk or formula."

One-third of pregnant women drink alcohol

Up to a third of Australian women continue to drink alcohol during pregnancy, despite growing awareness that it puts the unborn child at risk.

And contrary to expectations, higher levels of education make the mother-to-be more likely to imbibe, Australian medical researchers say.

The findings are based on a national survey of 1103 women of child-bearing age in 2006 and undermine health educators' hopes that the message not to drink when pregnant has resonated with expectant mothers.

Brangelina's Baby-Monitoring Mother's Day

Angelina Jolie celebrated Mother's Day by doing a little bumpwatch of her own, logging some quality time with the forthcoming family additions.

The expectant mom, accompanied by Brad Pitt and sons Maddox and Pax, checked out the inner workings of her womb and its current denizens via sonogram at a hospital in Grasse, France.

"Angie was due for a scan and they thought it would be cool to do it on Mother's Day and take Maddox and Pax along to see the twins for themselves on the sonogram machine," a source close to the couple tells E! News.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - It's a happy Mother's Day for an Arkansas woman she's pregnant with her 18th child. Michelle Duggar, 41, is due on New Year's Day, and the latest addition will join seven sisters and 10 brothers. There are two sets of twins.

"We've had three in January, three in December. Those two months are a busy time for us," she said, laughing.

The Duggars' oldest child, Josh, is 20, and the youngest, Jennifer, is nine months old.

The fast-growing family lives in Tontitown in northwest Arkansas in a 7,000-square-foot home. All the children whose names start with the letter J are home-schooled.

Suri Cruise and Her Bottle: Is She Too Old?

Get Suri a sippy cup, doctors say.

The 2-year-old who was spotted sucking away on Monday in NYC is too old for a bottle.

"Most pediatricians recommend a bottle should be given up by age 1 almost certainly by 18 months," Dr. Charlotte Cowan, author of the Dr. Hippo book series, tells Usmagazine.com.

Suri's constant traveling could play a factor.

"When babies are challenged, their diet is upset, their sleep is upset," Cowan says. "They will regress back to previous habits ... lingering with a bottle is comforting. You could argue that her parents have decided that this is not the time to try to wean her off if they're traveling frequently."

Sneak in Some Green

Parents of picky eaters may get a little break from unsuccessful attempts at getting their kids to eat their vegetables. Sunkist Naturals, maker of exceptional smoothies and juices, is introducing Glorious Greens.

Made with broccoli, cabbage, kale, dulse, echinacia, wheat grass, flax seed, spirulina, and green tea (among other ingredients) the flavor is sweet and delicious.

The key is mixing these nutrient packed veggies with apple, kiwi, mango, and pineapple. The result is a healthy dose of superfoods high in vitamins, antioxidants and Omega-3 EPA & DHA.

While Missy Lapine and Jessica Seinfeld have excellent recipes for making cakes from beets, and brownies from broccoli, we think opening a bottle of juice is a lot more time efficient for busy parents. The convenient 15.2 fl oz size fits in a diaper, gym, or hand bag quite easily.

Sunkist Naturals Glorious Greens is vegan, and features no added sugar, preservatives, artificial ingredients, or GMO. The Sunkist Naturals collection of smoothies and juices is currently available in Florida, and Southern California.
